ZACH HINEY, KNIGHT WIRE STUDENT SENATE REPORTER
The Wartburg Student Senate met Thursday, March 27.
A representative from Riverview Center in Waterloo came to talk to Senate about sexual assault and prevention methods for it. Riverview Center is an organization created for those impacted by sexual and domestic assault. Riverview Center has locations in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Decorah and two locations in Illinois.
For the past thirty years, Riverview Center has served as a safe space for survivors of sexual and domestic assault. They also have a 24-hour crisis line that anybody can use. The representative from Riverview Center also provided statistics throughout the meeting. Every 98 seconds (about 1 and a half minutes), someone is sexually assaulted. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18, and out of 1,000 perpetrators, only 5 will see jail time.
Additionally, survivors of sexual assault experience flashbacks, as well as feelings of grief, anger and shock. They are three times more likely to suffer from depression, four times more likely to contemplate suicide and six times more likely to suffer from PTSD.
The representative went on to talk about how stepping to stop an assault situation before it starts is super important. She talked about the importance of being an upstander and not a bystander. Bystanders sit back and watch what happens, but don’t do anything about it. Upstanders intervene quickly to ensure that nothing bad happens. The representative implored everyone at Wartburg to be an upstander and not simply a bystander.
To close out the meeting, the representative discussed ways students can get involved with Riverview Center. They have internships available, as well as volunteer opportunities that anyone can do with some training. For additional information, the Waterloo location can be contacted at 319-939-9599.
