WEEKEND RECAP: CROSS COUNTRY, TENNIS, GOLF COME OUT STRONG

This weekend in Wartburg sports saw both men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf and women’s tennis either start or continue their fall seasons. 

CROSS COUNTRY
Both cross country teams took first in their first competition of the fall season this weekend at the John Kurtt Triangular at Wartburg College. 

Sophomore Aubrie Fisher led the women in their perfect, 15-point victory. Fisher finished with a personal best in the 5k with a time of 18:28.6, beating out senior All-American Carina Collet, who finished in second at 18:37.5. The women finished with the top six times, and nine of the top 10. 

The men experienced similar success, also earning a perfect, 15-point victory. Joe Freiburger, a senior and reigning All-American, was the top finisher with a 6k time of 18:49.2. He was followed by sophomore Christopher Collet, with a time of 18:55.7.

GOLF
Men’s golf took to the course for the second time this season at the RedTail Shootout on Friday, Sept. 11, finishing second out of seven teams, with a team score of 153. The men have now finished in second place in both competitions. 

Junior Drew Olson was the Knights’ top finisher on Friday, accumulating a final tally of 36 (+1 over par) to tie for third place. 

Meanwhile, the women earned a second-place finish at the Wartburg Fall Invite on Sunday afternoon with a team score of 646. The Knights were led by senior Katie Choate, who finished fourth overall, and recorded her first top-five result of the season with a total score of 157 (+13 over par.)

Sunday’s showing for the women followed up their second-place outing at the Luther’s Sail Classic on Saturday, Sept. 5, beating six of seven teams with a score of 665.

TENNIS
Note: men’s tennis has not yet begun their season.

The women’s tennis team is still undefeated after a hard-fought 5-4 home thriller against St. Ambrose on Sunday, Sept. 13. The women had previously swept both Dubuque and Grand View.

The Knights’ came back from down 2-1 after doubles competition against St. Ambrose, with Wartburg earning singles victories at the Nos. 3-6 positions to claim the 5-4 triumph.

The Knights’ athletic schedule is quite simple for the remainder of this week, with the  high-contact sports postponed until the spring due to COVID-19.

At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, women’s tennis will take on Coe College at Coe.

Beginning on Friday, the men’s golf team will be competing at the Norm Ryerson Invite in Pella. They will conclude competition in Pella on Saturday, before returning to Waverly.

Saturday’s schedule for the Knights is loaded. The women’s golf team will begin competition against several schools at the Luther Invite. The clay target sports teams will begin its first-ever season at the Iowa Invitational. At 10 a.m., women’s tennis will compete at home against Buena Vista, followed by a 4:30 showdown with conference foe Nebraska Wesleyan. Finally, the men’s tennis team will face St. Ambrose at home at noon.
