FANS GET HOCKEY FIX WITH WATERLOO TEAM

MACKENZIE NUANEZ, STAFF WRITER

“I do go and watch the Waterloo Black Hawks when I am not busy with school,” Riley Barrett, third-year physical education major, health and coaching endorsement minor at Wartburg College, said. “They are a great team to watch. A benefit for me is that they are only like 30 minutes away from where I go to school.”

The Black Hawks are a Tier I junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Conference of the United States Hockey League under President,
General Manager, and Head Coach P.K. O’Handley. The Black Hawks’ home ice is Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa. The Black Hawks began the 2019-2020 season with a 2-1 win against the Tri-City Storms.

The team is currently 10-3 and are scheduled to play the Omaha Lancers on Nov, 15. “My family are ISU [Iowa State University] fans, so we do love to watch sports,” Patty Seavers, Bremer County residen, said. “When my husband and I get the chance, we do go to the Black Hawks hockey games before the snow gets bad during the winter season.

It’s exciting in its own way.” New for the 2019-2020 season, Slumberland Furniture and 1650 The Fan will spotlight social causes in the Cedar Valley. The goal is for 100 fans each month to make a contribution of $16.50 each.

Then the Black Hawks and the organization will donate $1,650 to each cause. For more information on the Black Hawks, go to waterlooblackhawks.com, or for more information on 1650 The Fan, go to 1650thefan.com.
