NO.3 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON

WARTBURG SPORTS INFORMATION

The No. 3 Wartburg Women’s Basketball team started off the season 2-0 with wins over No. 19 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and unranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the UW-Eau Claire Classic.

Wartburg defeated the Eagles 72-62 and the Blugolds 6954. Against UW-Eau Claire, three Knights scored in double-digits. Amanda Brainerd ’20 notched 20 points, Emma Gerdes ’20 made 16 and Kaitlyn Volesky ’21 contributed 13 points.

Gerdes tallied six rebounds and three assists. Volesky contributed five rebounds while Brainerd and Payton Draper ’21 each notched four assists. Wartburg’s defense only allowed seven Blugold points in the fourth quarter. In the Knights’ season opener against UWLa Crosse, three Knights scored in double figures, led by 13 points from Ally Conrad ’21.

Brainerd added 12, followed by 10 from Tori Hazard ’21. Gerdes recorded a team-high seven assists and six rebounds. Wartburg outscored the Eagles 23-12 in the first quarter. UW-LaCrosse fought back in the second frame to trim the Knights’ lead to six.

Wartburg led 38-32 at the half. UW-La Crosse finished the third quarter within one point of the Knights, but Wartburg rallied and put up 20 fourth-quarter points compared to the Eagles’ 11.

Next up, the Knights will play the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19 on the road.
