The Wartburg Knights edged out No. 19-ranked Carleton College by four points, 52-56 at the NCAA Division-III Central Region Cross Country Championships. Wartburg’s win came down to the wire on Saturday as the No. 7-ranked men raced to the program’s second-straight regional title and third in school history.
Joe Freiburger ’21, the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) MVP, finished second behind Carleton’s Matthew Wilkinson. Freiburger finished the 8,000-meter race in 25 min, 20.9 seconds. All-Conference honoree Morgan Shirley-Fairbairn ’22 was the only other Knight to finish in the top ten. Shirley-Fairbairn placed fourth. Dalton Martin ’22, Christopher Collet ’23 and Liam Conroy ’21 rounded out the top five Wartburg finishers.
Freiburger, Shirley-Fairbairn, Martin, Christopher Collet, Conroy and Caleb Appleton ’20 were named to the All-Region team. Other top-10 A-R-C teams included Luther in fifth, Loras in sixth, Central in eighth and Simpson in 10th. The No. 13-ranked Wartburg women earned second place at the meet. The Knights were two points shy of No. 6-ranked Carleton, who won the meet with 57 points.
Loras placed third, Luther seventh and Nebraska Wesleyan eighth. Carina Collet ’21, the twotime A-R-C MVP, finished in second place to Loras’ Kassie Rosenbum. Aubrie Fisher ’23, Trinity Borland ’22, Cassidy Christopher ’21 and Janelle Baeskens ’21 were the top five Wartburg runners. Carina Collet, Fisher, Borland, Christopher, Baeskens, Riley Mayer ’23 and Moriah Morter ’22 were named to the All-Region team.
Both teams earned an automatic bid to the NCAA D3 XC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Louisville, Kentucky. The men will run at 11 a.m. and the women will follow at noon. Last year, the men took fifth place and the women finished 26th
